Cannondale Moterra SL is “lightest full-power” eMTB

Cannondale’s new Moterra SL is a lighter version of their Moterra e-bike, bringing the weight down to 43.5lbs for the 150mm travel bike, with a 160mm fork up front. Cannondale used a custom-tuned version of the Shimano EP801 motor, typically used in bigger, longer-travel e-bikes. This makes the Moterra SL what Cannondale calls the “lightest full-power e-MTB” out there. The bike gets a 601Wh battery.

Cannondale implemented their FlexPivot technology on this bike, keeping the weight down a bit. The design uses a flexing chainstay rather than a Horst pivot, and the brand says it helps them dial in suspension response.

In what may seem like a shocking number, but maybe isn’t, is the bike’s 62.5° head tube angle. Either way it appears we’ve progressed into those angles by now. The Moterra SL comes in sizes S-XL and three build levels.

Southern Gravity debuts steel DH bike prototype

Windrock co-founder and Southern Gravity – Bike Park Solutions founder Sean Leader took the wraps off a prototype steel DH bike he’s been testing with Southern Gravity RAD Program riders. “In the last few years I have seen a change in the supply chain for downhill bikes that I felt did not align with my values; rising prices, decreasing quality, limiting supply, and most importantly sending or money out of the USA,” Leader wrote in a post to the Southern Gravity website. Singletracks spotted the bikes being ridden at Windrock over the weekend.

The chromoly steel bikes, built in Tennessee, offer 200/200mm of travel front and rear and utilize a DW-like setup. “It is fair to say the origin of this platform comes from Dave Weagle’s involvement with the Iron Horse Sunday,” says Leader.

Giant will sell some bikes at Dicks Specialty Stores

Dicks Sporting Goods will sell Giant bikes in some of the brand’s specialty stores including Moosejaw and Public Lands according to Bicycle Retailer. It’s unclear which bikes will be offered in stores and for now it seems the move does not include Dicks-branded stores.

Commencal T.E.M.P.O. T-type

The Commencal T.E.M.P.O. is billed as a short travel trail bike and it is… if you’re only looking at the back half of the bike. The 125mm of virtual pivot rear suspension travel is paired with a 150mm fork up front at a 65.5° head tube angle for a bike that is both “ultra-efficient and full of character.” The latest T.E.M.P.O. is SRAM Transmission compatible and the frame features a black crackle finish that makes each one unique.

  • Price: $6,500
  • Buy from commencal.com

Updated Fox Dropframe ¾-shell helmet

  • Price: $279.95
  • Buy from foxracing.com

Alpacka Adrenaline Sled

Alpacka Raft makes ultraportable inflatable watercraft for bikerafting, and now they have a snow vehicle too. (Though this one probably isn’t designed to carry your fat bike.) • Price: $49.99

Selle Marco Regal Short Dynamic saddle

The Selle Marco Regal Short Dynamic is designed for bikepacking and long gravel rides. The saddle rails attach at the very back of the saddle, which allows the body to flex more along its length. Last Coal and Glen alloy bikes

Gear Watch is a news feature and our goal is to remain objective but damn… these bikes look awesome. Both the Last Glen and Last Coal feature alloy frames with UDH dropouts, intelligent cable and hose routing, and come with a 6-year warranty that’s bike-park approved.

The Last Glen is an all-mountain bike with 150/160mm of travel front and rear and a 63.9° head tube angle. The size extra-large frame delivers a whopping 540mm of reach when paired with a 150mm fork, and buyers can choose to set the bike up as a 29er or MX.

As a proper enduro bike, the Last Coal boasts 165/180mm of suspension travel front and rear with a 63° head angle. A ~77° effective seat tube angle (depending on frame size and fork) promises decent climbing performance and the chainstay length varies based on frame size for an optimized ride feel.

  • Price: TBD

Fulcrum Red Zone Carbon+ wheels

The new Fulcrum Red Zone Carbon+ cross-country wheels drop 60g of weight off the already race-worthy Red Zone Carbon wheels for a claimed weight of 1,385g for the pair. How’d they do it? Fulcrum says a new mix of resins and “FF100 unidirectional high modulus fibers,” plus going from 28 spokes to 24 on the rear wheel, led to the reduced weight.

Mondraker Chrono Carbon DC

Can a hardtail be a downcountry bike? Mondraker seems to think so, and the new Chrono DC bike sees a 1° slacker head angle and more front travel than their Podium XC hardtail which nudges the DC toward trail bike territory. The Mondraker Chrono DC comes with a 120mm fork, 2.4″ tires, a 67.5° head tube angle, and a 1,150g carbon frame that promises to pedal fast without feeling overly sketchy on the descents.

New Insta360 camera uses AI for capture and editing

Insta360 has two new cameras on the market: the Ace and Ace Pro. The new action cameras have wide angle lenses and use AI to help capture “smarter action,” and users can edit with AI, seemingly warping their surroundings in the video. The Ace Pro was co-engineered with Leica and it can shoot 4K video at 120FPS and can charge to 80% battery life in under 25 minutes. The Ace is a “budget-friendly” camera with a smaller sensor, regular lens and standard charging.

The kit also includes a flexible air hose for use with a tire valve.

Spider rear racks attach easily to the bike’s seat stays, and are designed to work with most full suspension frames. Singletracks has one with cradle attachments in for test so look for a review soon.

Wolf Tooth ReMote 360

Modern bikes have a lot of controls, and sometimes it’s tough to fit everything on the bars. The new Wolf Tooth ReMote 360 is a 360-degree joystick-style dropper post remote that can be actuated in any direction to fit pretty much any setup. The hinged clamp goes on without having to remove your grips, and it can be positioned facing left or right, forward or back.

Deviate updates bikes with UDH

The freshly launched 2024 Deviate Claymore and Highlander II high pivot mountain bike frames are now UDH-compatible. If you have a slightly older version of either bike, don’t despair: Deviate is making UDH-compatible rear end upgrades available for current owners.

In a press release, Ben Jones, Deviate co-owner says, “We don’t want our customers to be unable to run the latest components and see their perfectly modern mountain bike become obsolete. So we’re delighted to be allowing existing Claymore and Highlander II owners to switch to a UDH setup with a rear triangle upgrade provided at minimal cost.”

Not only are the axles design to look good, they’re also likely lighter than stock parts and are made in the USA.

The Knolly Endorphin is back

Knolly is bringing back the all-mountain Endorphin, and the latest iteration has been designed with short riders in mind. Buyers can choose builds with matching 27.5″ wheels or mixed 27.5/29s in sizes extra small through large for riders ranging 4’11” to 5’10”.

The alloy Knolly Endorphin frame is notable for its straight top tube, two-position flip chip, Super Boost rear spacing, and size-specific chainstay lengths. With matched 27.5″ wheels, the Knolly Endorphin has 160/150mm of travel front and rear. Mixed wheel builds offer 140/135mm of suspension travel front and rear.

  • Price: $4,199-$5,499
  • Buy from Knolly dealers.

Orbea Rallon gets a little longer, a little slacker

The racy Orbea Rallon enduro bike was just updated, with more rear travel (167mm) and a slacker head tube angle (64° or 63.5°). Buyers can configure the bike as a 29er or mixed wheel bike, which Orbea says has a “totally revised suspension kinematics give a more progressive suspension curve.”

  • Price: $5,299-$10,999
  • Buy from Orbea dealers.

Second generation Canyon Grail gravel bike

The second generation Canyon Grail gravel bike has arrived, and it’s designed to be even faster than before. The racy gravel bike sees a longer wheelbase, a slacker head tube angle, increased fork offset, and aero-optimized tube shapes. There’s also in-frame storage a rad looking frame bag that attaches with magnets.

  • Price: $2,999-$7,999
  • Buy from canyon.com.

The Priority Apollo gravel bike is available in titanium

The Priority Apollo is said to be “the only titanium, drop bar, internally-geared, Gates Carbon Drive belt bicycle.” It’s a pretty specific niche for sure, but one that promises very little long-term maintenance. The Apollo is also available in an alloy frame with the same internal gearing and belt-driven, Gate Carbon Drive.

  • Price: $1,999 (aluminum), $3,999 (titanium)
  • Buy from prioritybicycles.com.

Limited Edition Allied BC40

Allied is known for producing excellent paint jobs for their bikes, and this limited edition OZ BC40 really caught our eye. The design on this Allied BC40 pays homage to the colors used by the Oz Trails network of trails in Northwest Arkansas and is sold as a frameset only with a Rock Shox SIDLuxe Ultimate 3P rear shock and Wolf Tooth Performance IS headset.

  • Price: $6,000 (!) for frameset

Orbea Occam updates offers two distinct flavors

The latest Orbea Occam updates split the line into two. The Orbea Occam SL features 140mm of suspension travel front and rear, and is designed to be a true trail bike with lightweight builds (as low as 10.9kg/24lb) that are designed for fast and efficient riding. The 65.5° head tube angle promises a bike that’s fairly progressive and fun to ride without suffering on the climbs.

The Orbea Occam LT branch starts with 150mm of rear suspension travel, paired with a 160mm fork up front. Buyers can choose from builds that include a coil shock and flip-chip adjustable geo.

All of the bikes are UDH-compatible and are available in both carbon and alloy versions.

  • Price: $3,199 to $10,599
  • Buy from Orbea dealers.

Trek drops new clipless pedals

Trek has a whole load of new and updated gear for 2024, including their Kovee and Line SPD-compatible bike pedals. Featuring adjustable pedal release tension, a mud clearing design, and quality bearings, the updated Trek pedal offerings are definitely worth a look.

Buyers can choose from the Kovee line of XC pedals or the more trail and gravity-oriented Line pedals. Within each line there are Comp, Pro, and Elite versions at various price points.

Transition Repeater with SRAM Eagle Powertrain

And now there are two. Transition lifted the curtain on the latest Repeater e-enduro bike, the second mountain bike so far to adopt the new SRAM Eagle Powertrain drive system. The hard-hitting Transition Repeater features 170mm of suspension travel front and rear and comes with SRAM’s bigger, 720Wh battery to fuel self-shuttled gravity rides.

  • Price: $10,499-$11,999
  • Buy from Transition dealers.

REI introduces value-oriented electric mountain bike

The REI Co-op brand DRT e is a no-frills electric mountain bike aimed at the casual rider. The part spec is as basic as you like with an aluminum frame, RockShox Recon Silver fork, and a SRAM SX drivetrain. Still, it’s priced at $4,999 which likely isn’t an easy sell for most riders, even those who may be e-curious.

Esker Hayduke LVS features super long, 600mm chainstays

No, that chainstay length isn’t a typo. The Esker Hayduke LVS takes its front triangle from the original Hayduke and stretches the chainstays to a whopping 600mm long. The result is more room for frame storage plus a smoother ride thanks to the added length of the flexible titanium members.

Playful, this bike is not, but it does promise to be super stable and will be of interest to bikepackers especially. Compared to the Surly Big Dummy, which has 821mm chainstays, the Esker Hayduke LVS is really just a tweener.

Carbon Nukeproof Megawatt features SRAM Eagle Powertrain

Nukeproof appears to be the first out of the gate with a SRAM Eagle Powertrain bike, the all-new carbon Megawatt eMTB. The mulleted Nukeproof Megawatt offers 170mm of travel front and rear plus room for a water bottle and accessory mount inside the front triangle. As the first Powertrain-equipped bike for sale we finally get an idea of the SRAM electric drivetrain pricing, and it does not appear to be cheap; the least expensive Nukeproof Megawatt carbon bike with SRAM Eagle Powertrain is priced at $9,899.

Updated Mondraker F-Podium lightweight XC bike gets improved suspension, new look

The Mondraker F-Podium gets updated kinematics thanks to an update of the Zero Suspension System. The shock is now located lower in the frame which allowed Mondraker to make the rear triangle more compact and therefore more rigid and lightweight. All told the racy carbon XC frame weighs less than 2kg.

  • Price: Unknown
  • Buy from Mondraker dealers.

Rocky Mountain introduces the Flow

Rocky Mountain’s all-new Flow bike might look like a dirt jumper, and there’s a good chance it could be, but that’s not what the brand is calling it. The Flow has everything to do with the proliferation of pump tracks around the globe and the bike is made to master pumps, berms, and rollers at a reasonable price point.

The Flow comes specced as an alloy frame singlespeed with street-ready tires and three different wheelsizes: 20″, 24″, and 26″. It is available in two build levels.

  • Price: $869-$1,259
  • Buy from Rocky Mountain dealers.

New Zipp 1Zero Hitop SW carbon wheels include TireWiz digital pressure monitor

The new Zipp 1Zero Hitop lightweight MTB wheels are designed to be more compliant than a typical XC wheelset. The SW versions feature 30mm-wide rims, 66° of engagement in the rear hub, and an integrated TireWiz pressure monitoring system at a total weight of 1325g for the pair. A less expensive ‘S’ version drops the TireWiz and features a slightly less engaging rear hub. Both sets can be configured with a Microspline driver for those who aren’t all-in with SRAM.

  • Price: $625-$1,025 per wheel
  • Buy from SRAM retailers.

Oneup accessory mounts

More and more mountain bike frames are coming with top tube, under mount accessory bolts, and Oneup has a couple new products to fit. The EDC tube strap mount and inline pump mounts are as simple as they are inexpensive, giving riders another spot on the bike to stash gear securely.

  • Price: $19.95
  • Buy from oneupcomponents.com

Nemo Tensor Extreme Conditions sleeping pad boasts 8+ insulation R-value

Nemo says the new Tensor Extreme Conditions inflatable air mattress offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio available. The “Regular Mummy” size weighs right at a pound which is probably too much for ultralight bikepackers but perhaps worth the weight for more casual, cold weather adventures.

Bookman Volume Bike Light makes it easy to adjust light

Bookman is a new Swedish-based brand and their Volume bike light uses a “Power Wheel” dial to adjust the brightness and mode, rather than a button like most lights. The Volume comes in two different models; an 800 lumen and a 1500 lumen. The Volume 800 has a plastic casing, while the 1500 has a bigger battery and aluminum body. The lights also have replaceable, USB-C rechargeable batteries so you can pack a backup.

Wilde x Nitto Country Bar made for bikepacking

Wilde Bikes and Nitto have partnered for their Country Bar, a bikepacking handlebar with geometry and flex made for long days on the bike. The aluminum bar has 50mm of rise, a 27° backsweep, and a 31.8mm clamp. The Country Bar is 800mm wide at the stock offering and is available in either black or silver.

Kona drops aluminum Process X and X DH

Kona Bikes is releasing two new aluminum bikes, the Process X and Process X DH. The Process X was previously only available as a carbon bike and the Process X DH.

The Process X has 162mm of rear wheel travel and is made for a 170-180mm fork and the frame has a flip-chip that can set it to either 29″ wheels front and rear, or a mixed-wheel setup. The build includes a 12-speed Shimano drivetrain. The Process X sells for $4,449.

The Process X DH has the same frame as the Process X, but is built with a 190mm dual crown fork and ships as a mixed-wheel bike, though it can be equipped with a 29er rear wheel. The build includes a 9-speed SRAM drivetrain. The Process X DH sells for $4,700.

  • Price: $4,449-$4,699
  • Available: Kona dealers

Silca titanium derailleur hangers

Silca says their new 3D-printed titanium derailleur hangers not only save a few grams, but they’re also up to 12 times stiffer than stock hangers. (Stiffness does seem to defeat one of the main purposes of a hanger, and so far the main application is pro-tour race bikes.) There’s a UDH version available for mountain bikes plus frame-specific hangers for select road bikes.

Fezzari launches electric fat bike

Two weeks, two electric fat bikes. Following the announcement of the Rocky Mountain e-Blizzard, the Fezzari Explorer Peak is up next with 27.5×4.5″ tires and a Shimano electric drive system. Having a motor should make riding through fresh pow a little easier, and we suspect plenty of folks will be into the Explorer Peak for getting around town thanks to the stable, fat tires.

  • Price: $4,599 – $5,499 before $200 off for pre-orders
  • Pre-order from Fezzari.

Mondraker Crusher update

The Mondraker Crusher e-enduro bike was first released in 2017. The latest update uses the same geometry and kinematics as the Crafty according to Mondraker and even has the same 160/150mm of travel front and rear. The main difference between the Crusher and Crafty seems to be the Shimano motor and battery in the Crusher.

  • Price: TBD
  • Buy from Mondraker dealers.

Dainese MTB shoes

Dainese is tiptoeing back into the mountain bike shoe market with two new pairs of kicks. The Materia (above) is a clipless pedal shoe featuring a Groundtrax outsole which was initially developed for moto applications. Acto flat pedal shoes, on the other hand, feature a Vibram sole for maximum flat pedal grip. Pro versions are available for both shoes, adding premium features like the PER-FIT lacing system (Materia) and a ZPLATE insole (Acto) that’s said to deliver the perfect blend of stiffness and flexibility.

  • Buy from Dainese retailers.

Trek Red Barn Refresh lets customers trade their bikes in

Trek launched a new program last week, allowing customers to trade their used Trek bikes for in-store credit toward a new bike. Currently, the Red Barn Refresh program is focused on in-store exchanges, but according to Bicycle Retailer, Trek will launch an online marketplace later this year. Red Barn Refresh bikes still come with a Trek limited lifetime guarantee and 30-day unconditional guarantee and bikes will receive a comprehensive inspection with necessary repairs before they are sold.

Rockshox VIVID shock update

The Rockshox VIVID enduro/DH shock has been updated with a new damping system dubbed Touchdown. Here’s how SRAM describes the tech.

“TouchDown technology bypasses the compression damping generated by the main piston in the first 10% of its travel. Quieting trail chatter is just the beginning. To handle hectic terrain, the next 70% of Vivid’s travel rides on controlled and stable compression damping. Adding to TouchDown technology’s adaptability, Adjustable Hydraulic Bottom Out lets you tune rear suspension feel for the harsh hits that dip into the final 20% of travel.”

  • Price: $699-$729
  • Buy from Rockshox retailers.

Vitus E-Mythique LT launch

A recent Vitus press release says the new alloy E-Mythique long-travel eMTB “incorporates learnings from our current E-Sommet range to create an eMTB that is ready to ride everything that is expected of a modern enduro e-bike.” If anything, the E-Mythique looks like the E-Sommet’s replacement, at least until the E-Sommet goes even bigger.

The E-Mythique is positioned to electrify the popular Mythique trail bike, which features 140mm of travel front and rear. However the E-Mythique ups the travel substantially, earning the LT designation with its 170/160mm of travel front and rear. Otherwise the geometry is very similar to the (also mixed-wheel) E-Sommet which has slightly more rear travel.

The biggest differentiator between the E-Mythique and the E-Sommet is the use of a Bafang motor system in the E-Mythique compared to a Shimano EP8 in the E-Sommet. Overall the E-Mythique offers a great value for a long-travel eMTB with builds starting at just $3,699.

Cervelo now has a FS bike, the ZFS-5

In case you missed it, renowned road cycling brand Cervelo now has a full suspension XC bike, the ZFS-5, following the launch of their first-ever hardtail MTB. The single-pivot, flex-stay ZFS-5 can be configured with either 100mm or 115mm of rear suspension travel and 100mm or 120mm of front squish. Naturally the bikes are lightweight for racing, and are not cheap.

The Mukluk is now the Heyday, plus updated Beargrease builds

The fat bike formerly known as Mukluk is getting an update, starting with a new name: Heyday. Salsa conducted an audit and found the name could be “potentially problematic” as it refers to traditional indigenous footwear in arctic regions.

The Heyday rolls on 26×4.6″ tires out of the box, but it can also run 27.5 fat and 29+ wheels and tires if you’re so inclined. Buyers can choose from an aluminum or carbon frame, both of which feature Alternator 2.0 dropouts that promise “multiple drivetrain options” and the ability to run all those different wheel sizes.

  • Price: $1,699-$3,299

The Starling Mega Murmur is a new, enduro-sized steel bike that builds on the popularity of the original Murmur. Featuring a single-pivot design, the Mega Murmur features 170/165mm of travel front and rear and longer chainstays than the standard Murmur which Starling says should fit taller riders better while delivering a more stable ride dynamic.

The Mega Murmur can also be configured for ‘trail mode’ which gives the bike 140mm of travel. Starling tells us the Mega Murmur frame is fully made in Britain, which includes both the front triangle and the swing arm.

New Roval Traverse trail wheels

The new lineup of Roval Traverse trail wheels feature three different models to fit most riding styles and budgets.

The Roval Traverse HD wheels are designed to be the toughest in the line, offering World Cup Enduro performance for racers and park rats alike. Specialized uses different layups for the front and rear wheels to optimize control and durability, and the rim features a “Flat Top” bead edge that reduces the chance of pinch flats.

Next up, the Roval Traverse SL II wheels are said to be the brand’s lightest trail wheelset to date, weighing just 1,645g for the pair. Like the HDs, the SL II wheels feature front and rear specific layups and are available at two different price points.

Finally, the Roval Traverse Alloy wheels are designed for durability first and foremost, and the rims use a new 6013 aluminum alloy. The 30mm internal rim width is a good choice for most trail and enduro tires, and the price is right at $850 for a pair. Available in 29″ diameters front and rear, and 27.5″ rear only.

NEAT utilizes an all new suspension kinematic with the shock placed lower in the frame for improved initial sensitivity with additional shock absorption farther into the travel. Mondraker says complete NEAT builds can be configured to weigh less than 18kg (just under 40lb). Mondraker NEAT bikes come with a 360Wh battery, with an optional range extender adding another 160Wh.

New Abbey wheel truing tool

After nearly six years of planning and development, Abbey Tools has a wheel truing stand they’re willing to put their name on. But wait, it’s not just a stand. Bravus brews a handful of NA beers

Last week, we published a story about non-alcoholic beers written by Jeff and it was clear that there were a lot of riders abstaining from alcoholic beers from one reason or another. Another brand we’ve been able to try lately is Bravus Brewing Co, which makes a variety of brews, from lighter beers like a Raspberry Gose and Golden Light to porter and stout taste-alikes and two different IPAs. The Peanut Butter Dark is a favorite if you want a desert drink after dinner without the grogginess the next morning.

Pinarello Dogma XC bike debut

The new Pinarello Dogma XC bike made its debut at the recent World Cup race at Nové Město–and made the podium. The bike can be configured with either 100/90mm or 120/100mm of travel front and rear and utilizes flex stays that are part of a unique rear triangle that features two separate triangles and no bridge in between. The upshot, according to Pinarello, is increased tire clearance (though the XC bike is limited to 29×2.35″ tires), shorter chainstays (actual length unknown), and better mud clearance.

The other thing that stands out about the new Dogma XC is the tiny triangle within the front triangle just above the bottom bracket area. Pinarello says their design gives the bike a stronger bottom bracket area and also allows for an oversized pivot bearing.

  • Price: Unknown
  • Buy from Pinarello dealers.

Onza Svelte tire update

The updated Onza Svelte is designed to roll fast for XC and marathon racing in dry, hardpack conditions. Available in just one size — 29×2.30″ — the tan wall version is said to weigh only 780g thanks to its lightweight XC casing.

  • Price: $69.90
  • Buy from Onza dealers.

Specialized/Fjallraven drops latest batch of gear

Last year, outdoor gear brand Fjallraven and Specialized bikes teamed up to release a line of bikepacking bags and apparel. The duo has a handful of new items out with their latest release, including an expandable hip pack, a sleep poncho, kind of like a wearable sleeping bag, a sun shirt, gear vest, and a handlebar rolltop bag, not to mention a few other items.

Limited edition Moots Womble Slider

Provided photo.

A $10K singlespeed mountain bike isn’t for everyone so it makes sense that Moots is billing this one as a limited edition. The titanium frame on the Moots Womble Slider features sliding dropouts and the geo is optimized for a properly long 140mm fork up front.

  • Price: Builds start at $9,999. Frame only price is $4,975
  • Buy from moots.com.

Updated Canyon Spectral:ON

The Canyon Spectral:ON electric trail bike was updated in 2022, and this year another change brings longer and beefier Fox and RockShox 160mm travel fork options, resulting in a more slack front end for aggressive enduro-style riding.

  • Price: €4,999-12,399
  • Buy from canyon.com.

Wilier Triestina Urta Max SLR

The Wilier Triestina Urta Max SLR is an XC race bike with a generous 120mm of rear suspension travel, paired with a 120mm fork up front. The 67.5° head angle suggests the bike is a capable XC descender while the 75° seat angle ensures it climbs comfortably too. However the negative-angle stem places the rider in a decidedly racy position.

  • Price: €6,200-11,200
  • Buy from Wilier dealers.

Limited edition Shimano gravel shoe for Unbound

Check out these limited-edition colorways for Shimano’s RX6 and RX8 gravel shoes with designs inspired by the Flint Hills of Kansas.

  • Price: $180 (RX6) and $275 (RX8)
  • Buy from Shimano dealers.

New Rotwild R.E735

The Rotwild R.E735 is a decidedly enduro e-bike. With 170/1600mm of travel front and rear, mixed wheels, a 720Wh battery, and a 64.5° head tube angle this bike begs to be self-shuttled all day long.

  • Price: €8,999-11,499
  • Buy from Rotwild.

Specialized Turbo Levo SL II

Specialized just updated their lightweight electric mountain bike, the Turbo Levo SL, and a lot has changed. While previous models featured a split front triangle similar to the Stumpjumper, the new Levo SL simplifies things while keeping the same 150mm of frame travel.

Gone is the 150mm Fox 34 fork, with a 160mm Fox 36 taking its place on all but the smallest frame size. The Turbo Levo SL II has also gone mixed wheel (the first version was a 29er) and features an updated Specialized SL motor while keeping the same 320Wh capacity battery. With the redesign the Turbo Levo SL gets a slacker, 64.6° head tube angle and a much longer reach, growing by 20-30mm depending on the size. Buyers will be stoked that one number in particular is now smaller: the MSRP of the Turbo Levo SL Comp Carbon is $500 cheaper.

Canyon drops three new eMTBs

In perhaps a sign of things to come from other brands, Canyon is launching electric versions of three of their traditional mountain bikes: the Torque, Strive, and Grand Canyon. (Ahem, note the re-positioning of the Specialized Turbo SL noted above.)

Canyon Torque:ON CF

The Canyon Torque:ON has been in the brand’s line-up for a while now, though this carbon version is new. The bike features 180/175mm of travel front and rear and can be configured with a massive 720Wh or 900Wh battery, which positions this as a self-shuttling gravity bike.

  • Price: from €5,999
  • Buy from canyon.com
Provided photo.

Canyon Strive:ON

The Canyon Strive:ON is based on the brand’s Strive enduro bike and boasts similar geometry with a 63.5° head tube angle and 78° effective seat tube angle. The Strive:ON features 170/160mm of travel front and rear and can be configured with a 625Wh or 750Wh battery.

  • Price: from €5,999
  • Buy from canyon.com
Provided photo.

Canyon Grand Canyon:ON

Finally, Canyon is launching an electric version of their Grand Canyon hardtail. This 29er comes with a 120mm fork and the brand is offering a number of accessories to make this MTB commute-worthy too.

  • Price: Starting at €2,999
  • Buy from canyon.com.

Old Man Mountain debuts pizza, pannier racks

Bikepackers are beginning to embrace fixed panniers and front racks, and Old Man Mountain is happy to oblige. The Pizza Rack can hold up to 35lb and is compatible with most MTB wheel and fork setups. It’s not just for pizza either; if you can lash it on, it’ll ride up front, and you can add an $80 basket if that’s your jam.

Old Man Mountain also introduced two new bags, the 13L Ponderosa Panniers and 10L Juniper Trunk bag. Both are waterproof and are designed to fit the Old Man Mountain Divide pannier rack to a tee.

Limited edition Pearl Izumi Contours Gravel Collection

The Pearl Izumi Contours Gravel Collection features limited edition designs for men and women on Expedition Pro bib shorts ($265), PRO Mesh jerseys ($150), and Expedition FF gloves ($35).

The Pro’s Closet, Sklar, and the Radavist release limited gravel bike build

The Pro’s Closet and the Radavist have teamed up with Sklar to release five limited batches of 25 Super Something steel bike builds.

  • Price: Starting at $2,499.99 for a singlespeed, flat bar bike
  • Buy from The Pro’s Closet.

All of the profits from jersey sales will go to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) in the US and the WHO European Framework for Action on Mental Health in Europe. Handup Taco’d collection

Handup’s latest glove and fender collection pay homage to everyone’s (second?) favorite after ride food: tacos. (Wait, pizza is #1, right?)

New Tifosi Rivet Sunglasses are classic sporty

Remember when cycling glasses weren’t the size of car windshields? Sure more lens coverage can be great and Tifosi’s new Rivet sunglasses are a half-frame design with adequate coverage that doesn’t overwhelm your entire face. This sporty style is lightweight (28g), and comes with three vented(!) lenses or choose the Fototec photochromatic lens that automatically adjusts in light or dark conditions.

  • Price: $79.95
  • Buy from Tifosi

Wolf Tooth Fat Paw and Karv grips now available in… brown?

Ok, brown definitely isn’t the flashiest color out there. But then again, you don’t see it on too many bikes, so why not? Wolf Tooth recently added brown to their colorful Fat Paw and Karv foam friction grip collections.

Hopworks brews beer to benefit Northwest Trails Alliance

Hopworks Trail Time Summer IPA is a limited release to benefit the Northwest Trails Alliance, and the brewery is hosting a beer launch party at the brewery today from 4-9pm. Whew. Sea Otter was a whirl wind. We met with a lot of different brands in three days and got a look at their latest products. Here is a smattering of them, with everything from bike locks, to bike racks, and everything in between that got us excited at the show.

Knog Scout is an alarm and if that doesn’t work, a tracker too

The Knog Scout is a sleek device with a built-in alarm that can be armed using a free smartphone app, and it mounts to standard bottle cage mounts using anti-tamper screws. Once armed, if the bike is jostled the device emits an 85db alarm that’s sure to draw attention. The rechargeable battery should last for months, and you can monitor it using the app.

Don’t tell thieves this, but there’s also a tracker hidden inside that works with Apple’s Find My app and network. So if someone does get past the alarm, there’s still hope that you might get your bike back. Think of it as added insurance.

Abus makes an alarm too

Abus showed off their bike alarm too, the Alarmbox 2.0, that works similarly to the Knog above. The Alarmbox 2.0 has a box and a wrapped chain to secure the bike. The alarm is sensitive to motion and shocks and will start with a short warning for smaller impacts. If the tampering does not stop, a 100db alarm is set off until the movement stops.

Shimano and WTB make saddles for e-bike to enduro

Shimano didn’t have too much to show, aside from the latest CUES and e-bike motor tech recently launched, but they did have some new saddles on display from their PRO brand. The MSN 1.3 is an enduro saddle whereas the MSU (for upright) is geared more toward e-bikes.

WTB made some bold moves with their latest saddles, the Gravelier and the Devo w/Pickup. The Gravelier allows some hip flexibility and better blood flow where it counts. The Devo is a great option for e-bikers who want a dedicated spot to grab, lift, or push the bike.

  • Price: $95.95 each
  • Buy the Gravelier from gap30cycles.

New helmets from Fox, Limar, KAV, and POC

Fox showed off two new helmets; an updated Dropframe Pro with MIPS and BOA, and enhanced fit and comfort. The Dropframe Pro also meets e-bike safety standards and will be available later this year. Fox also showed off a new cross-country/trail helmet which should also be available in coming months.

Limar may be new to Stateside mountain bikers, but the Italian brand has been at the head protection game for decades. They’re bringing their helmet expertise to the U.S. and we got a peek at their trail and all-mountain helmets at Sea Otter.

The Etna pictured above with the ear coverage isn’t available in the U.S. yet, but the Pora and the Tonale are. The Tonale, also pictured, is a trail and all-mountain helmet with MIPS and rounded coverage, whereas the Pora will be have a smaller coverage area.

  • Price: $179.95 (Tonale), $134.95 (Pora)
  • Buy from us.limar.com

KAV Helmets showed some of their 3D-printed helmets at Sea Otter. KAV says their helmets are printed to the customer’s head measurements and comes with a virtual fit session. The helmets aren’t cheap, at $320, but they do have a one-time, 100% crash replacement policy during a five-year warranty.

  • Price: $320
  • Buy from kavsports.com

Lastly, POC had a new gravel helmet on display and it’s certainly a departure from their slick road helmets. The Omne Ultra, based on the Omne helmet adds patches, bungees, and velcro so you don’t forget ANYTHING.

  • Price: $170
  • Buy from Wiggle.

New MTB bags from Mission Workshop and Camelbak

Camelbak’s new M.U.L.E. 5 hip pack can be used with bottles, a bladder, or both to extend the ride. The new hip pack is made from recycled materials, has improved ventilation, and a bungee strap system on top for securing extra layers.

Camelbak also released their Mini M.U.L.E. packs to fit kids who need to stay hydrated on the ride too. The packs have ventilated straps and are also made with recycled materials.

Mission Workshop has a slick new hydration pack out for mountain bikers too. The Hauser costs $270+, will accept a 3L reservoir and is built with a perforated back panel and tough, weatherproof outer fabrics.

Udog Shoes have innovative strap closure system

These Udog Distanza shoes are made to minimize hot spots and beef up protection with a rubber outsole that wraps over the toe box. The Tension Wrap System has 16 points of contact between the upper and the wearer’s feet, according to Udog and this should also help optimize power delivery.

  • Price: $200
  • Buy from udog.cc

Cardboard travel box costs 10% of a traditional bike bag

Bike travel boxes are notoriously expensive, but Orucase has a great solution: make them out of cardboard instead of pricey, engineering-driven materials. Orucase, a brand that does make $500+ bike travel bags, showed their coming cardboard box travel box, which ships small and is customizable to the bike with a telescoping design and different packing materials. The box will retail at somewhere around $50 and though it won’t last nearly as long as their other bags, it’s a pretty affordable alternative for infrequent fliers.

  • Price: About $50
  • Buy soon from Orucase.

Electronic droppers from Magura and KS

Magura, known for their powerful hydraulic brakes, had a new version of their Vyron electronically-activated seatpost on display. The post is not available for sale yet, but the return feels quick and it’s one less cable to clutter up anyone’s cockpit. Magura expects to release this one later this year.

Not a lot of brands are doing electronic dropper posts yet. RockShox is the biggest known brand to produce one and Magura has had theirs on the market for a while. Kind Shock may have been one of the earliest brands to get into the dropper post game, but they haven’t been as competitive as some other brands lately. Surprisingly, they were showing an electronic post too. Unfortunately we couldn’t wrangle up any available KS representatives to find out more.

Available details said this post, the Lev Circuit, will be available in 30.9mm and 31.6mm diameters, with 125, 150, 175, and 200mm of travel. It’s a Bluetooth remote with an air-charged chamber.

EXT shows off new air shock

EXT is a high-end suspension brand based in Italy, with roots in dirt bike suspension. Their first air shock, the Aria has a dual-positive air chamber, so you can tune the top stroke and bottom out force and the small bump sensitivity for a custom feel. The shock is also tunable with independent high- and low-speed compression circuits. The shock sells for $1,150.

Pearl Izumi’s new trail pants are made for digging

Pearl Izumi is introducing a new line of apparel dedicated to trail builders this summer. The Pulaski gloves are a mix between a work glove and a bike glove so you can ride to the dig site and shovel with the same glove. Their Elevate pants, $170, are an all-mountain pant tough enough for building and light enough for riding.

Don’t forget about this top cap garage door opener

How do you open your garage door?, I was asked roaming by the 12 Speed Products booth. I suppose it’s different for everyone, but these folks made a remote opener that fits in a top cap.

  • Price: TBD
  • Buy from 12speed.com

Yakima’s outdoor kitchen makes camp-cooking easy

Yakima didn’t have any breaking new bike products for the season, but they did strike my curiosity with this EXO OpenRange Deluxe camp kitchen, which can be hoisted and attached to a hitch rack. Camp kitchen setups are somewhat of an art and always a pain, but this looks like a pretty sweet setup to use.

Saris is adding more racks to MHS later this year

Saris may have been bought earlier this year, but they are excited to add some new bike products this summer. They last released the MHS (Modular Hitch System) with their bike trays. The MHS allows users to customize their hitch rack, like above, where they have an upcoming single-arm bike rack with their cargo tray. The attachments should be relatively easy to install/uninstall. Keep an eye out for the single-arm rack later this year.

Kuat launches premium tailgate pad, cheaper Piston Pro, and overlanding system

It was a big week for Kuat with the launch of three new products, staring with the Huck tailgate pad. Three sizes are available to carry two, five, or six bikes and features include straps to secure the bikes to the pad and the pad to the tailgate, along with a flap for access to the tailgate handle and backup camera. The outside of the pad features a durable vinyl material while the underside is soft to protect the vehicle’s finish. The Kuat Huck pads don’t come cheap, priced between $149 and $320 depending on the size and shape.

Matt reviewed the high-end Kuat Piston Pro X bike rack a couple years ago, and now there’s a slightly less expensive version that skips the Kashima-coated arms and the built-in tail lights. Priced at $1,098 the Piston Pro still isn’t cheap, but it does knock about $300 off the price of the Piston Pro X.

Kuat is also getting into the overlanding scene big time with their IBEX “truck bed rack ecosystem.” Buyers can start with a base rack system and add accessories like the panel shown here and various Kuat bike trays as well. The system will initially support popular pickup trucks including the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra. Prices will range $1,489-$1,589 for the base system, with accessories sold separately.

New Maxxis XC tire and tire compound

It’s not often that Maxxis launches an entirely new mountain bike tire tread, and this one is designed for very specific conditions. The Maxxis Severe is billed as an XC mud tire, promising to provide grip in wet conditions without packing on the mud. MSRP: $93.

Maxxis also has a new MaxxSpeed tire compound for XC tires. Here’s how they describe it: “The new MaxxSpeed uses silica as a filler in the rubber polymer creating a compound that performs better across the board compared to the old 3C MaxxSpeed. Racers benefit from reduced rolling resistance and improved wet traction.”

Taco Bell themed Klunker

Yo quiero this Klunker. We tested another State Klunker last year and it’s a fun bike to ride; this Taco Bell themed bike looks even tastier! If you’re not ready to go full on Klunker, pick up a set of purple Taco Bell grips for just $15.99 or a handlebar bag for $39.99 to make your bike Fire.
