The first 10 miles of what will hopefully become a 60 mile trail system are now in place and ready for riders. As of the writing of the description, trails currently consist of an easy 1 mile beginners loop and a 9 mile intermediate loop which encircles the mountain and takes full advantage of the terrain and elevation. Think of these current loops as flow trails with elevation. If you crossbred F.A.T.S. and Pisgah, this would be their baby. Trails flow clockwise.
Update 3/5/14: Coldwater Mountain now has 25 miles of trail. IMBA has arrived 3/2014 and plans to add 11 more miles over the next couple months bringing the trail to approximately 35 total miles.

Take I-20 to Exit 179. Head north on AL 202/109 Donald G. Holmes Bypass for approximately 2.1 miles. Turn right on Coldwater Road, and the new public access road to the trailhead will be on your right (approximately .2 miles). Follow that road til it ends at the trailhead. A: It's definitely a good place to start. The Baby Bear and Mama Bear trails are a fairly easy beginners trail. As you get better, there are some great challenges further up the mountain!
A: It can vary a lot...last year it was in the 70s and dry for most of December. Years past it's ranged from cold and wet to warm and wet to cold and dry. Overall though coldwater drains really well and it takes a proper storm to really bog it down. It is very rocky though so if it's not warm/sunny enough to dry off the rocks after some rain it can be a little slick.
TLDR: probably good.
Q: I am planning a trip through the South later this year. If I could only ride one, which trail system should I ride and why -- Oak Mountain or Coldwater Mountain?
A: October is my favorite time of year to hit Coldwater! I don't believe hunting is allowed on the property but even if it is, there are so many mountain bikers who use the trails that hunters will be aware of you. Wearing blaze orange is always a good idea in fall just to be on the safe side.
