Gurney South was added over the last two years and brings the total mileage up to 22, or 35 kilometers. South has mostly flow trails and are they FUN. A good system for families and those who love to rip on cross country style trails. North is the original system, with both double and single track, and has now become more technical – rocky and rooty – due to usage since it was built in 2015. By combining rides on the two trail systems one can easily get a 2.5 to 3.5 hour ride in. Located right off the NY Northway at exit 20. Check it out…you’ll be glad you did. Operated under the jurisdiction of Queensbury Parks & Recreation Dept. And, finally, fat bike grooming in the winter months with two Sno – Dog machines operated by a hearty team of volunteers.

That is actually a great idea. I bought carbon rims last year and Trek only had the front, so I had them put on the front and I waited (4 months) to get the back. The guy at the bike shop warned me I wouldn’t notice any difference other than the front would be lighter – and he was right. I couldn’t tell. I got that back rim – yeah… it really made a difference.

Hi. Point taken. All my early bikes had external routing and it never bothered me – until cabling went internal. External is a con for me now, for non-tech reasons. I like the aesthetic of internal cabling, particularly now there’s an extra one for the dropper, and I also think it makes a bike easier to clean – no amount of diligence with a brush could ever quite clear the gunk out from under external cables. But it’s not a big con – so point taken.

Even the best internal cable routing (Santa Cruz) still requires taking apart your rear brake and the required bleed that goes with it. No one has ever shown internal cable routing to possess any tangible performance benefits. My hardtail, a Banshee Paradox has all external routing, is simple to work on and trouble free.

Not much lighter than my aluminum wheels or maybe the same.
My carbon set are the Zipps with a single wall. Where I ride there is a lot of roots and off camber sections. I love the wheels for the very compliant and soft feeling ride . They can almost feel like youā€™re riding with a super low tire and need air. So they smooth the trail for sure . But the traction advantage is real . You still have to make sure not to 100% trust the stick to the ground feeling. You can loose traction and I did .
I have a super stiff aluminum set of Rolf wheels that just rock then the soft feeling Zipp Moto wheels. Love both . Do I want some super lights carbons ? I believe Iā€™d love to try some . My riding these days is a bit slower and itā€™s more about the enjoyment of the ride than the speed . I say that and then start to realize the speed of certain sections is the enjoyment of the ride . Traction and being able to crush slalom type sections that are root filled and off cambered at break neck speeds has a great fun factor for me. I will be slowing a bit though. I broke my back and pelvis endowing down a super steep section with a drop. It is filled with rain ruts and roots. You have to zig zag trees at the same time . I was launched through the air wrapping a tree. Heard the bones break. Tried to walk but that was impossible. So using my arms had to low crawl out . Luckily I was only a half mile back in . Took 6 hours to crawl out. It started raining so I was mud filled . The rain and mud helped me slide down the trail better .
They had to cut everything off of me . The next day I was in the surgery room getting a couple rods in my
Sacrum . Now the biggest rod goes horizontal across from hip to hip. The sacrum was partially shattered. Iā€™m 60 am still love that rip through the tech sections but realize itā€™s time to slow down and enjoy the day so there is another.
Oh this was about carbon vs aluminum wheels correct. lol . Ride whatever performs the best . I love the feel of of a great wheel . I believe either types can be great.
I was just thinking of when I shoot a traditional bow. I never liked the feel of an aluminum arrow shot out of a longbow. A cedar shaft always felt better. Then I tried aluminum and carbon . The carbon felt more natural like wood and its advantages for accuracy were much greater than aluminum.
So I say ride what feels the best on your trails . Ride what give you the greatest advantages. Iā€™d probably choose carbon over aluminum most of the time .

When it comes to wheels, shaving 1/2 pound per wheel makes a huge difference. You generally shave a 1/2 pound per wheel simply by going tubeless. Then a bit more going carbon, depending on rim choice.

There is a little bit of a ā€œhopā€ at the weld that I didnā€™t bother dealing with for the sake of maintaining even spoke tension but other than that the thing pretty much fell together and rides brilliantly. Use DT Prolock nipples and maintenance isnā€™t an issue so I guess when carbon feels as good as Al, is that cheap and easy, maybe then Iā€™ll think about it.

I actually had to slow down rebound because the lighter weight made the suspension so much more active. I don’t see the value in ones that weigh as much as a great aluminum rim though. On my enduro bike when I’m running dh casing tires and ex 471s I don’t see the advantage is spending and additional $500 a rim for carbon that weighs the same. I do want another set of light ones for my xc bike though.

Poor lacing practices and hamfisted riding, I can destroy wheels, regardless of plastic or beer cans! Frankly, I have seen plenty of trashed plastic rims alongside aluminum rims. Both are subject to failure. I build my wheels personally and have not needed to true them. All wheels in my bike collection are subjected to trials riding since it is requisite.

They often don’t shave weight necessarily. Like many, I have them for the reliability. With Al rims, I was always truing them and bending them back into shape with pliers. I never touch carbon rims.
